Portraits of Jesus actors in passion plays in Europe.

The concept of this work consists of portraits of Jesus actors and personal questions to the Jesus performer.

Passion plays have a long tradition and its history goes back to the Middle Ages.
In 2008 I started to take photographs of Jesus actors of different passion plays and I interview the actors about personal changes since they started to play the role of Jesus.
All Jesus actors are photographed in front of the same backdrop with a Rembrandt-like light. There will be an extensive list of questions about personal changes through the role as Jesus, how the interaction with the role changed the personal experience concerning religion and faith, the impressions during the crucifixion and the description of other impressive scenes and experiences.
Very important was the fact, that all actors should be amateur players, people who play this role from conviction.

The series deals with the question that will probably never lose their fascination: what did Jesus really look like?

I had the idea to this work in summer 2008. While retouching portraits of business manager and workers I saw all the different faces in front of me and I asked myself, which face would be recognized by everybody and from which everybody has a certain imagination. Soon I found the subject Jesus and worked on this concept.

Most passion play performances take place within a period of several years, so this project will continue until 2013.

Das Konzept der Serie besteht aus den Portraits der Jesus Darsteller und persönlichen Fragen an die Darsteller.

Passionsspiele haben eine lange Tradition und ihre Geschichte reicht weit bis ins Mittelalter zurück.
Seit 2008 fotografiere ich Jesus Darsteller verschiedener Passionsspielorte und befrage die Darsteller nach persönlichen Veränderungen, die sich durch die Übernahme der Rolle ergeben hat.
Alle Jesus Darsteller werden mit Rembrandtschen Licht vor demselben Hintergrund fotografiert. Die Fragen beschäftigen sich mit der Rolle des Jesus, wie es ist, Jesus darzustellen, die Eindrücke bei der Kreuzigung und die Beschreibung besonders eindrucksvoller Szenen und Erlebnissen.
Sehr wichtig ist, dass alle Darsteller diese Rolle freiwillig spielen, dass es keine professionellen Schauspieler sind, sondern Menschen, die aus Überzeugung und Leidenschaft diese Rolle spielen.

Auch beschäftigt sich die Serie mit der Frage, die ihre Faszination wohl nie verlieren wird: wie könnte Jesus wirklich ausgesehen haben?

Die Idee zu dieser Serie entstand, als ich im Sommer 2008 am Computermonitor zahlreiche Bilder von Managern, Angestellten und Arbeitern bearbeitete. Ich fragte mich, welches wohl das Gesicht wäre, dass die meisten Menschen kennen und von dem jeder eine gewisse Vorstellung hat. Relativ schnell landete ich beim Thema Jesus und begann, das vorliegende Konzept auszuarbeiten.

Da die meisten Passionsspiele im Abstand von mehreren Jahren aufgeführt werden, wird diese Arbeit noch mindestens bis zum Jahr 2013 dauern.
